Kherai Puja or worship of Assam’s Bodo
Kherai Puja or worship is an agriculture-based festival celebrated each year by Bodo community people of Assam.
This festival is actually based on agricultural activities. Bodo people celebrate this festival as a sign of breeding and fertility.
Generally, this festival falls during Assamese Kati month (Assamese word ‘Kati’) or English October to December month.
In this festival, they worship their lord ‘Bathou’. Bathou is actually Lord Shiva. They define lord Shiva as Bathou in their own language.
They know that it is impossible to meet lord ‘Bathou’ physically. This is why they worship ‘Sizu tree’ as the symbol or sign of their lord.
In the worship, they do a lot of rituals to satisfy ‘Bathou’. In their treatment, they sacrificed many animals and birds, like Duck, Chickens, and Goats etc.
