Here we are today with a new post. Guess now, what it is? Yes! This post is all about the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary.

As you know, there are total 18 wildlife sanctuaries in Assam and among these 18, the Amchang is a very significant one.

A simple Intro of Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary

Declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 2004’s 10th June, the Amchang wildlife sanctuary is situated in the east part of Guwahati city.

Did you know Guwahati is the main doorway of North-East India?

Yes, my friend!

This is the main reason why Amchang is one of the most visited areas of north-east India after Kaziranga and Shillong.  

With an area of 78.64 km2, this is the 7th largest wildlife sanctuary in Assam. Now you may think I am going on and on like a brake-less vehicle, without telling you why Amchang is famous for.

Ok, then let me explain you……….Actually, Amchang wildlife sanctuary is especially famous for different species of Mammals like Capped Langur, Flying fox, Jungle cat and different types of birds, like White-backed vulture, Lesser Adjutant, Greater Adjutant etc.

You should know that this is the home of 44 different species of mammals, including 250 species of Avian and considerable number of Snakes and reptiles.

Here in the below, I share a list of different species founded in Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary: –

Reptiles and Snakes: – Indian Cobra, Python, Russell’s viper, Monitor Lizard etc.

Mammals: – Capped Monkey, Asian Elephant, Flying fox, Hoolock Gibbon Monkey, Barking Deer or Muntjac, Sambar, Leopard big Cat, Assam macaque Monkey, and Slow Loris.

Birds: – Lesser Adjutant, Slender Billed Vulture, Hornbill, White Backed Vulture, Greater Adjutant, And Imperial Pigeon.

How to Reach Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary?

This is the age of the internet and it’s so easy to go anywhere by opening the Google map in your smartphone or tablet and to reach your final destination.

Whatever, suppose you have no internet connection and you have no idea how to reach the exact location of Amchang, what will you do?

Maybe you ask people…………Ok, that’s also a great idea too but sometimes it feels little frustrating. If you really want to reach there by yourself then you should remember these things below: –

  1. Amchang is situated in the extreme east direction to the Guwahati City.
  1. 15 km away from Guwahati Railway station.
  1. This is 40 km away from Guwahati Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI).
  1. And comes under the address of the forest division of Kamrup district.


Best Time to Visit Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary

Of course, as I suggest you in our other posts. Here is also the winter season is the best time for visiting Amchang.

You can go there from the month of October to April (Government of Assam also suggest to visitors to visit there from October to April month).
